Basics 1:

The basics 1 course offers students a great drumming foundation.  Students will study the parts of a drum, parts of the drumstick, sticking exercises, steady beat, quarter and eight note reading.  For those that have played for a while, here is a chance to hone in on your technique.  The slower tempos allow us to focus on how our hands are working and become a more efficient percussionist!

*1 pair of drumsticks and practice pad required.  Vic Firth SD1 and HQ Realfeel 12” Speed Pad suggested.*

Basics 2:

Basics 2 picks up right where Basics 1 leaves off!  Quality of sound, technique and more complex rhythms.  Rudiments are beginning to be stressed in this course.  Why?  Drum rudiments are essentially the “scales” of drumming.  Whether your goal is marching band, concert band, mallets, jazz band or rock drumming, all drumming styles use combinations of rudiments.  More complex use of eighth notes, increasing speed and control are the focus of this course.

* 1 pair of drumsticks, practice pad and the book “A Fresh Approach to the Snare Drums”*

*Vic Firth SD1 and HQ Realfeel 12” Speed Pad suggested.*

CHOPS!

CHOPS! Is takes on a rudimental family and raises the level of intensity, control and speed!  Diddles, single strokes, buzz rolls, open rolls, flams and drags will be topics throughout the year.  Students should be at an intermediate level for this course and have the discipline to work hard at building speed.

*Vic Firth SD1 and HQ Realfeel 12” Speed Pad suggested.*
